The 2023 Austrian Euro coin set is dedicated to the 150th anniversary of the commissioning of the first Viennese water supply system, which took place in 1873. This event became an important milestone in the history of Vienna, significantly improving the quality of life of the city's residents.
The construction of the first Viennese high-mountain water supply system lasted 3 years, from 1869 to 1873. Its opening took place in October 1873 in the city of Schwarzenberg. The total length of the water supply system was 150 km.
The initiator of the project was geologist and politician, Professor Eduard Suess. Thanks to his efforts, it was possible to implement this large-scale project, which solved the acute problem of lack of clean drinking water in Vienna.
Initially, the capacity of the water supply system was 138,000 m³ of water per day. Later, due to the introduction of additional sources and the construction of a reservoir, the volume of water supplied increased to 220,000 m³ per day. The source of water for the first Viennese water supply system is the Rax and Schneeberg mountains in the south of Lower Austria and Styria. In order to protect the quality of the water, the entire Rax-Schneeberg-Schneealp massif was placed under constitutional protection in 1965.
The commissioning of this water supply system was an important step in improving the sanitary conditions in the city and preventing epidemics, which had previously been common due to the poor quality of the drinking water.
