The 2021 Euro coin set is dedicated to the First Viennese Mint Inside are eight coins that make up the full annual set of freshly minted Proof plate euro coins.
"Proof plate" means the highest quality: the minting tool undergoes numerous processing steps before the first coin is struck.
Schlom was the first documented Jew in Vienna and held the important position of Mint Master under Duke Leopold V of the Babenberg dynasty in 1194. His appointment to this position demonstrates the significant trust of the ruler and the important role of Jews in the economic life of medieval Vienna.
Schlom's tragic death in 1196 at the hands of the Crusaders is confirmed by historical sources. This incident shows the complex relations between the Jewish and Christian populations of that time, as well as the vulnerable position of the Jews, despite their important economic functions. The first synagogue in Vienna is mentioned in 1204, which shows the rapid growth of the Jewish community after the arrival of Shloma. The Jewish quarter developed around today's Judenplatz, where Jews lived in close contact with the Christian population for over 200 years.
The Viennese Jewish community indeed became one of the most important in medieval Europe. However, its existence was interrupted in 1420/21 by order of Duke Albrecht V, which led to the expulsion and murder of community members.
The release of the 2021 euro coin set with Shloma on the cover highlights the importance of this historical figure for the history of Vienna and the desire of modern Austria to recognize and preserve the memory of the city's Jewish heritage.
